Okay, so Moontower Comedy is not one of those competition festivals, but that doesn't mean there aren't some big winners.
So, basically everything. I'm excited about everything.
This year, Riot expanded to included a number of performers from out-of-town, lending that awesome camp vibe that makes a festival so much fun. Not to mention, making it even more of a draw for Angelinos who may have already seen Comedy Living Room or This is Not Happening.
Tonight kicks off the second RiotLA Comedy Festival in DTLA. The first outing, back in September 2012, featured a collection of the Los Angeles alt scene's favorite big shots and up-and-comers. I even asked founder Abbey Londer why she'd have a festival in a city that has festival level and quantity of shows every night (of course, she had some good answers)
The sophomore edition features the same quality and a goodly number of local heroes like Kumail Nanjiani, Ron Funches, Jay Larson and Kyle Kinane, but it also has a refreshing infusion of out-of-towners, bringing that "camp reunion" feel that comedians love about a good festival.
So, here's a few of my favorite folks from back East that you lucky Angelinos get to become acquainted with this weekend!
Dan St Germain
Brooke Van Poppelen
PS Sorry Motownphilly is gonna be in your head the rest of the day!
Joey McIntyre on Comedy Film Nerds, Doug Loves Movies, TGIF Reunion on Pop My Culture and a whole lot more.
It seems fitting that WTF with Marc Maron should kick things off, since that's the podcast that made everyone in the industry suddenly think, "Wait, this can help a career? Podcasts for everyone!"
