Last night's comedy crawl to benefit the Light of Day Foundation for Parkinson's Research was an incredible thing to see. Both because so many people came out to support a worthy cause and because it was like being at the center of the New York Comedy universe. At one point, I looked around New York Comedy Club and saw Jim Gaffigan, Artie Lange, Jay Oakerson and Rick Shapiro all at the same time. Never mind that Rich Vos, Bonnie Macfarlane and Greer Barnes showed up a little later on.
The club was packed to the gills and the audience clearly appreciated the high caliber of comedians they were seeing. Which was great, since sometimes benefit crowds can be kind of uptight and are not really into comedy, just supporting a cause.
Since it was so full, I skulked about the front bar and green room throughout the night and got to watch everyone reunite and catch up with Rick and I got to hear Artie Lange tell the story of an early on set at the old old NYCC, when he stepped on an exposed nail right before going up and doing 20 minutes, then hitting a second spot before going to St Vincents to get a tetanus shot.
I missed the stops at Stand Up NY and Village Underground, but I hear they were just as great. If you missed out but want to help, you can donate to Light of Day Foundation online.
