I really wasn't gonna write anything about LCS. Really. I've always avoided it as something the sullies the art with its crass reality competition format. But then I watched it and it wasn't all that bad, so here are some random thoughts:
Ben Kronberg I've seen that opening bit and his style work great live. He went up there knowing what he does isn't what gets passed to the next round on LCS and made it memorable. But he did also come off as a prick, can't tell how much was the editor's doing.
Are You Doing a Character? From the judges reaction to Kronberg and that repeated question, they are not interested in any of your alt bullshit.
The Judges A couple of people who got passed to the next round weren't that funny, but on the whole they did a solid job of picks that made sense. And, frankly, I can't imagine having to come up with feedback for that many comedians that would not only be at least marginally valuable, but make sense on TV.
Jimmy Shubert had me laughing the whole time. Nice to see his experience being rewarded.
Most of the women are older, nice to see that they didn't stack the deck with TV friendly looking Iliza's and are actually showcasing experienced comedians, so we don't have to have the old "Women aren't funny" debate again. Oh god, we're going to have to do that anyway, aren't we?
Joe Machi, guys!
