I know I've already talked about The Roast Battle (aka The Rell Battle Battle). A couple of times. But I can't help it, it's pretty much the most fun half hour I have every week. (Last week, only listening to Bret Ernst tell tales of road misadventures at 3 am could top it). And last night's last battle of 2013 was a KILLER.
Everyone knew Benji Aflalo vs Yassir Lester was going to be great. They are both sharp writers (hell, Benji writes for The Burn) and they came up in comedy around the same time, so they had a shared well of references to draw on. I won't recount the entire battle, but here's a few of the lines that keep popping into my head and cracking me up:
"Yassir's acne is so bad that when he ordered Proactiv, they just sent him a ski mask"
"Benji was raised by a Mexican nanny, which is why he has that moustache."
"Yassir is palestinian and black, so his was the only family throwing crack rocks at Jews"
"I Googled Benji and got the result 'Why? Did you mean 'Tony Hinchcliffe'"
And my god, the judges, Brody Stevens and The Roastmaser General, himself, Jeffrey Ross brought a lot of wisdom (and #Positivity) to the proceedings. They were not only trying to entertain, but really instruct the combatants and give them good notes ("Stop reading off your phone and look at each other.").
It was crazy close, everything you'd want a good battle to be. Yassir edged out Benji in the first round, then Benj came back strong in rounds 2 & 3. The third round went on a little too long and dragged into some half-hearted B material, but it was still so close that Jeff called for a sudden death, no-notes freestyle round to decide it. And Yassir killed it with an absurd lumberjack-based barb.
Then came the final voting and the controversy. By the book rules gave the W to Yassir for winning the tie-breaker sudden-death round, but Benji edged him out in the audience vote (and would have likely won if we were forced to choose before the sudden death). So, there was a ton of debate in the parking lot afterward. It felt like some kind of post-game tailgate party.
Seriously, if you haven't checked out Roast Battle, it's at 12:30 Tuesday night in the Belly Room. Get there early for a seat (or to tell jokes on the late night mic). Follow them @RoastBattle for updates on who'll be spewing verbal violence this week.
